"I hate this crap..." Monica poubted at Lukas, the two of them staring cross-armed at their shared virtual display.
"I hate this crap... sir", Lukas sternly reminded his favorite underling Monica.
"And what the hell, didn't I hear Dekona specifically tell you to stay in the deprivation circle? You willingly came all the way out here and now you don't wanna do your job is that it?." Monica looked to the side, then down, then up and with a slightly pained look uttered, "I.. had a bad experience."
Lukas raised an eyebrow and replied, "Ellaborate."
For a moment Monica looked as if she would not reply, burrying her face in her hands in a mock washing gesture then peering up and opening her eyes she said, "A... human. Noticed me."
Lukas' brow furrowed urging Monica to "go on..."
"I was... Alright I was just going person to person like Dekona instructed we do. I was only in this guys mind for a second when I felt these giant.... well I can only describe them as bars clang together around me... around my mind. Like a prison. I couldn't get out of him and I couldn't see his face."
"What did he say." pressed Lukas.
"He said, stay out of my mind you little bitch or I'll cook your brain. I'll cook it and eat it right out of your skull you understand me?!!"
"Then the bars slammed apart and he basically launched me straight back to my body. It felt like someone had shot me out of an antique cannon at the speed of light and I hit a wall... my body... face first. Dekona woke me up and told me to take a break. So here I am."
"That sucks," said Lukas.
"You don't know the half of it... I have to see through their eyes at what they're doing... Like half of them are doing shit that makes me want to throw up rigth here just thinking about it. Maybe a third of them are even looking at a panel of any kind much less one I can even begin to decipher! Even their damn written language is...! RRGRGGG humans are just fucked up."
"You're sure he was human?" Lukas asked
"He was humanish. I assume so. I didn't get a look at him but he's on that big black one right in front of us."
"How can you tell?" Lukas eagerly probed.
Monica sighed and looked away from the virtual display as she darkly spoke, "Because it's a big black emptyness from our perspective. It's terrifying. After what happened to me Dracen says we're supposed to stay the hell away from it. Don't even peer in it's direction."
Moments passed in silence and then with a wicked smile, Monica dared to think to Lukas, "You know... All that human ship needs is a little shove in the right direction to...!"
"Stowe that shit right now, and don't ever let me catch you in my brain right out in the open again, you got me?" Lukas snapped back at Monica, making a conscious effort to crane his neck to the side and glare her right in the eye, letting her know that he meant business.
Monica hadn't realized until too late that her thoughts had spilled over from Lukas' mind into the bridge around them, echoing loudly through the bare steel. She did however realize that it was totally against the rules for a novice like her to be practicing on board their ship outside of work in such a delicate hour. Lokri Psychics might be heralded back on their homeworld but here on the frontier, she was expected to keep a tight leash on her thoughts for just such an occasion might occur. Any lapse in self restraint could not only result in her spilling unwanted thoughts and information but deafening or mentally damaging a ships bridge crew during a crisis.
"Yes sir..." Monica groaned and sunk back in her chair a bit. "You honestly think that Dekona gives a damn this far out in space?"
Lukas didn't respond but instead did his best to appear deeply involved in his virtual display, which at the moment was deep in analysis of the human vessel directly in front of them.
"You know it doesn't take a psychic to see why you're really in a bad mood, "Lukas uttered. "You think I like riding on another species' tailcoat like this?"
"I know exactly what you think. Always." Monica stated so matter-of-factly.
"Yeah, you in your second-year greatness." Laughed Lukas, a smile cracking his face.
Monicas expression went cold, a frown creasing her pale face. The bridge began to quake ever-so slightly as she stood up slowly, turning away from Lukas to walk away, the image of two pink eyes burned bright in his vision and words echoed in his mind..."
"A hundreds lifetimes of experience won't serve you an ounce down there. Think about that."
"Cute..." Lukas audibly retorted, thinking to himself below even his inner-breath that these words seemed almost too wise to have come from a child by his standards.
Then Lukas remembered something that caused the hair on the back of his neck to momentarily stand up.
Monicas eyes are blue.
