The term synthetic refers to any artifically created life-form not originally organic-based and without a genetic structure.

Artificial intelligence exists in almost any civilization technologically mature enough to achieve space travel, with variations on its application and nature, as well as on the rights of artificial persons, occurring across the cultural spectrum. On Earth, synthetics are used extensively by all human factions, in operational roles varying from low-cost security/combat synthetics (seen left) to maintenance droids to fully automated starships and mining platforms.

Because a synthetic consciousness is essentially a software application that can be contained within any appropriately complex computer system, synthetics are extremely versatile. An Artificial Intelligence, in Divergence, is not limited to a single chassis but has the ability to interface with a number of systems.
